A large crowd attended the City of Athens Master Plan Open House Thursday night at The Texan.
The event was the second public workshop connected with the project.
“It is extremely important that we get back on track with the long range plan for the City. The COVID outbreak has kept us apart, kept us from congregating to get input from our citizens,” said Mayor Monte Montgomery. “This is so important for our City to lay out the map of the direction we want to go the next 10-15 years.”
Norris Design Project Manager Rick Leisner guided Thursday’s workshop, discussing several scenarios for the City’s future growth. The scenarios included:
-- Scenario 1: Sustainable Growth
-- Scenario 2: Tourism
-- Scenario 3: Education and Neighborhoods
Each of the scenarios also came with detailed ideas for reviving the City’s downtown area.
The presentation was streamed live on the City’s Facebook Page and can be found here.
Those in attendance were asked to rank which scenarios and plans were most important to them.
“I think the Comprehensive Master Plan is an opportunity for all citizens to participate in the future planning of the City of Athens,” said City Manager Elizabeth Borstad. “It is very exciting, we have a lot of different directions we could go, but this gives us the opportunity to be on the same page and all head in the same direction.”
