Citizens of Athens are proud of their heritage and dedication to continuously preserve and improve our City. The Boards and Commissions of the City of Athens are crucial to supporting the City Council in the development of policies and shaping of the community.
Athens has 9 boards and commissions that serve different roles in the City government.
The Airport Advisory Board strives to keep the Athens Municipal Airport efficient and adequate to the needs of the City and of the air transportation industry. It studies and makes recommendations to the City Council on all matters of Airport operations and improvements in order to advance the City as an air transportation center.
The Athens EDC Board of Directors coordinates the broad-based expansion of the business tax base through business information, assistance, and incentive programs.
The Athens Housing Authority administers the Choice Voucher Program to provide improved living conditions and housing choices for low-income families.
The Commission has the power to hear and rule on employee disciplinary appeals, testing appeals and establishes local rules for the administration of the Police and Fire Civil Service System.
Construction Code Commission considers exceptions to the adopted building codes that are appropriate, safe, and consistent with the intent of the code.
The Parks and Recreation Board advises the City Council in the acquisition, planning, development, improvement, and maintenance of all parks and public recreation facilities owned or controlled by the City.
The Planning and Zoning Commission advises the City Council regarding amendments to the Comprehensive Plan, changes of zoning and zoning to be given to newly annexed areas, makes recommendations regarding the approval of plats of subdivisions as may be submitted to it for review and other planning related matters. The Planning and Zoning Commission also serves in an advisory capacity on any planning related item(s) in the City.
The purpose of the Building Standards Commission is to review existing buildings and structures that have been inspected by the Fire Marshal, Building Official and Health Officer of the City that are considered to be substandard and/or dangerous to the community.
The Zoning Board of Adjustments generally considers requests for dimensional variances to the zoning ordinance such as reduced setbacks, height limitations, or number of parking spaces.
City Council board appointees perform invaluable public service by broadening the forum for community input and by enhancing the processes of democracy. The City of Athens is truly grateful for the dedicated and loyal board members and their service to our great City.
