Garbage and Recycling

Residential and commercial garbage and recycling services are an essential part of keeping Athens beautiful and ensuring our local natural environment remains pristine.

Republic Waste Services provides all garbage and recycling services to residents and businesses within the City of Athens. If you have questions about your garbage service, please call City Hall at (903)675-5131 or contact Republic Services directly at (903)677-1276. 

Residential Garbage and Recycling Services

All residents are provided garbage and recycling services that are billed monthly with the City's water and sewer charges.  These services total $15.56 per residence per month. 

Residents may set up garbage and recycling services at the same time they set up their water service.  Each resident is provided one (1) refuse cart and one (1) recycling cart.  An additional refuse cart may be requested for an added cost of $1.00 per residence per month.

  • Recycling is picked up each Wednesday.
    • No leaves or brush should be placed in recycling cans. 
  • Bagged leaves and brush are picked up each Wednesday.
    • A maximum of ten (10) bags of leaves will be picked up per residence on a weekly basis.
    • Brush must be no more than three (3) inches in diameter and no more than four (4) feet long. 
    • Brush must be bundled.
  • Refuse carts should not be overloaded. Overloaded carts cannot be picked up via the collection truck's mechanical arm.

Commercial Garbage Services

Commercial customers must contact Republic Services directly at (903)986-5324 to arrange for dumpster service.

Community Collection Station

The Community Collection Station, located at 500 Aaron Street, is open to City of Athens residents on Saturdays from 8:30 am until 3:30 p.m., excluding holiday weekends.  The Collection Station accepts garbage refuse (excluding construction debris), brush and glass recycling. A valid driver’s license and Athens water bill must be presented for access to the Collection Station.
