The first Athens Fire/Rescue Fire Academy wrapped up Thursday night, with participants celebrating their successful completion of the course with a dinner. Fire Marshal Lance West, who led the class, said that the academy was a success, with attendees excited to participate and learn about firefighting.
"It worked really well for people to be happy to be here and excited to be here," he said.
The Fire Academy showcased the various roles firefighters undertake, from responding to fires and emergency medical services to performing rescues.
One of the highlights of the academy was when participants got to work with a fire hose, gaining hands-on experience in the field. West noted that the academy was a great opportunity for residents to learn about the important work of firefighters and the many hats they wear.
The academy was open to Athens residents or employees over the age of 21 with a clean criminal record. The free program was a hit with attendees, and West has promised that there will be another academy in the future.
