Downtown Athens is a wonderful asset to our community. Our historic downtown contains a variety of beautiful buildings built in the early 1900’s that surround the 1913 Henderson County Courthouse, one of the most unique courthouses in Texas! In Athens, all roads lead to downtown, making it truly the heart of the City. The result is a bustling mix of activity and energy making the area a destination for tourists and locals alike. Come explore the streets of downtown to check out attractions like the Henderson County Historical Museum, art galleries with local and regional artists’ work, antique shops, retail, and more!
A Landmark Venue. The Texan opened its doors in the summer of 2018 and will be a arts, live music, and events venue located in the heart of downtown just off the square!
The Downtown Façade Improvement Program is designed to promote the continued use and maintenance of historic commercial and multi-use properties in the Façade Improvement Program Downtown Area by helping property owners rehabilitate and preserve eligible structures. Reimbursement grants are provided to owners in recognition of the positive impacts that individual building improvements can have on overall appearance, quality, growth and vitality of the downtown.
